Venue
Our venue for ‘The Bike The Plane and The Barrel’ would have been the Aphra Theatre at the University of Kent. The Aphra theatre is a black box space with a proscenium arch layout and tiered seating. This was an ideal venue for us because it provided access to wings to allow the smooth transition of set piece on and off the stage, and the tiered seating ensured that any use of smaller objects and props would be clearly viewed by the audience.
The Concept
-
We decided on our ideas for set very early on in the process, but we hadn't been able to build anything prior to the cancellation.
-
The set design was intended to be a reflection of the limbo-esque world of the Lost Property Box. We therefore decided to make cardboard a big part of the design as this seemed like a good material that could be representative of storage. We felt that the stereotyped image of lost property boxes are typically made from cardboard and therefore we felt that it would be an ideal fit.
-
Two tall towers built out of cardboard boxes would be positioned either side upstage. The boxes would be labelled with various items that people commonly lose such as “socks” and “car keys”, as well as other comical things people are said to have ‘lost’ such as “minds” or “dignity”. These labels are intended to be lighthearted and humorous.
-
Further smaller unattached cardboard boxes would be piled up next to these towers. We would use these to grab various props from throughout the performance.
-
Above the stage area hanging from the rigging would be a large sign, painted a cardboard brown colour, which would read “lost property”.
-
For the majority of the performance a large section of floor space is left vacant and available to allow us to move across the stage unhindered.

How it would have been built
-
We spoke to Sam in the School of Arts workshop about our ideas for the set, prior to the festivals cancellation. He suggested building the towers of boxes from two wooden flats that the cardboard boxes could then be attached to. The front and sides of the cardboard boxes would be attached to flats which would give the illusion of a 3D tower of stacked boxes which would be more lightweight and easier to assemble.
-
The dimensions for these towers:
Height - 4 Meters
Width - 2 Meters
-
The “Lost Property” sign would have been painted onto a 1 x 2 metre canvas which was available in the school of arts workshop
-
Materials for the cardboard boxes would have been gathered from our own possession alongside asking local shops if they had any spare cardboard boxes from deliveries.

Set Layouts at different points in the show
-
For the majority of the show there is clear and vacant space available in the middle of the stage to allow us to move fully across the space and easily transition between scenes.
-
However at certain times in the show there will be 5 large cardboard boxes spread across the stage. These are the boxes that the characters “sleep in” and therefore would have been big enough for the performers to fit inside. This formation is drawn below in a birds eye view. This formation appears in the pre-set, scene 1, scene 5 and scene 11. During the pre-set each of us will be hidden inside our corresponding characters box.
